Ok ok.. this one might be a little overkill for hanging out in your apartment for a week, but if you’ve ever wanted to step into the mind of a Survivalist it’s the next best thing. Written by John “Lofty” Wiseman, who served in the British Special Air Service (SAS) for twenty-six years, it covers nearly every subject known to man and is an excellent resource for anyone into camping, hiking, first aid or otherwise.

It’s easy to understand and is full of illustrations.

This one should be a no-brainer: Small, easy to use and nearly free, the P-38 can opener was created for WWII GI’s and got it’s name from the 38 punctures needed to open a can of rations at the time.

To me there would be nothing more frustrating than not being able to open a can if I was hungry. Throw one of these in your backpack, glove box or desk drawer and forget about it- since you can get 10 (!) of these for $5.95 off Amazon there’s really no reason to skimp on this one.

It might be one of the easiest things to overlook, but if you are out of electricity for a few days a halfway decent crank-powered radio is going to be your new best friend.

Let’s be realistic– most of us may have portable stereos but we’ve probably never tried to actually put any of the monster C or D-sized batteries in them.. and keeping them around “just in case” isn’t going to happen either.
